Compared to Xinjiang and Tibet, Inner Mongolia is a relatively peaceful ethnic autonomous region. even in the eyes of Beijing, ethnic Mongolians are generally considered well integrated. Large scale protests like the one in 2011 is an exception. But the new government order to teach key school subjects, i.e. literature, history and ethics, in Mandarin instead of in Mongolian is causing unrest in Inner Mongolia.

The chairwoman of the autonomous region calls the order an "important political mission" to build a common Chinese national identity. The police has launched a massive hunt for protesters who publicly demanded the preservation of their ethnic language. The South China Morning Post reported that party officials have been required to "monitor the local cadres and the public to identify any radical moves and speeches”.
